Barbara L. Lewis
Research Lab Manager

Research Interests:
I am currently looking at the effects of VTA stimulation on the bistable membrane potential states of pyramidal neurons in the prefrontal cortex, and the receptors involved, using in vivo intracellular recording techniques. In addition I am looking at these effects in animals that have undergone a neonatal ventral hippocampal lesion, a proposed animal model of schizophrenia. Due to the changes we have seen in these animals. I am also doing in vivo extracellular recording in the VTA, with preliminary results indicating an increase in the firing rate of the dopamine cells. These studies are also being investigated using anatomical tracing and receptor and protein immunohistochemical localization techniques, in an effort to elucidate the mechanisms and circuitry involved.
