Information Processing in the Nucleus Accumbens:
in vivo electrophysiological studies

Since stimulation of hippocampal afferents can elicit a transition to the UP state in accumbens neurons, we explored whether spontaneous UP events are correlated with spontaneous activity in a population of hippocampal neurons, measured as local field potentials.

"Ripples" in the hippocampal electrode are observed during periods in which accumbens neurons are in the up state

Are UP-DOWN transitions in the accumbens observed in isolated cells or in a network of neurons? Local field potentials (expression of activity in a population of neurons) synchronous with up events indicate that this pattern is exhibited by a network of neurons

Eliminating hippocampal afferents suppresses accumbens field potentials

Activation of dopaminergic projection to the accumbens evokes a depolarization resembling the up state

During this VTA-evoked depolarization, the response to cortical inputs is altered
